Air pollution is one of the biggest environmental risk to health. It may not always be visible, but it can be deadly. This year, Standing Committee on Human Rights and Peace Center for Indonesian Medical Students’ Activities (SCORP CIMSA) held its annual celebration on International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction with a concern in air pollution as a disaster. BREATH: Bits to Reduce Air Pollution’s Threats, our event in accordance to International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, was held on November 2nd 2019 at Campaign #ForChangeID Jakarta. BREATH aims to raise public awareness towards air pollution as an issue that we need to tackle on together. The event was open to the public and approximately 30 people which consists of students organisation, youth organisation, non-government and government organisations were in attendance.
The event commenced with a talk session by Mr. Agung Pujo as a representative of Dinas Lingkungan Hidup Provinsi DKI Jakarta and Ms. Ririn Radiawati as a representative of Vital Strategies. Mr. Agung Pujo presented about Air Quality Control in DKI Jakarta, while Ms. Ririn discussed about The Importance of Air Quality Control in Cities. The attendees had the opportunity to discuss comprehensively about the theme of event “Reduce Air Pollution and Achieving #CleanAirForAll” with the experts on engagement session. These sessions hopefully enhanced the understanding of audiences regarding air pollution.
During the event, participants were divided into groups along with one facilitator provided by CIMSA to attend the focus group discussion session. They shared thoughts, opinions and suggestions regarding cases and topics on Air Pollutions at Indonesia. The ultimate goal of this session is to provide a constructive feedback session among participants on air pollutions. At the end of the event, participants joined a Pollution Catcher workshop. Participants are introduced to methods on making simple pollution catcher to identify areas with poor air quality. We hope that through this event, we can encourage further engagement of the society to keep moving on a path towards cleaner air.
